Blog Post 01.09.11 The Personality and Deity of the Holy Spirit – John 14:16

My devotional this morning will be from the 14th Chapter of the Gospel According to John beginning with verse 16. These are not new verses and you will be familiar with them as I read. Jesus said; “And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.” Then drop down to verse 26; “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” That’s reading from the 14th Chapter of the Gospel According to John. Now we usually think of this chapter “Let your hearts be troubled” or “In my father’s house are many mansions” and we remember these and then he said “I am the truth the way and the light that no man cometh unto the father but by me” and we remember all of these verses. But my message this morning is going to be about the “The Personality and Deity of the Holy Spirit”. In simple words the word personality means person and the Holy Spirit is a person. Not a real person but a person of the Godhead and the bible refers to the spirit as whole. And I should begin my message this morning by saying that the Holy Spirit and the word holy designates the spirit as God himself. It is without mistake it is without sin but it has come to accomplish the will of God and it is a leader and a guide and a comforter to people that are in this world at this time. Now I won’t be able in the time allotted to bring you all the scriptural quotations about the Holy Spirit on this morning but beginning with Ephesians chapter 2 the Apostle Paul was writing to the members of the church at Ephesus and he said to them “and you (you that is the members of the church and you saved people and I can designate it as the same this morning you saved people) hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins” and what that means is when we were lost and away from God that the Holy Spirit found us dead in trespasses and in sin. Not only did it find us dead in trespasses and in sin but it also quickened us. And the word means to make alive a new creation in the Lord Jesus Christ. In the 8th chapter of the Book of Romans Paul writing to the person said “if any person (any man) have not the spirit of Christ they are none of his”. We can stop right here and take a quick inventory of ourselves and know if we are saved or not saved and if we have the spirit of God bearing witness with our spirit in our hearts we are the children of God. But if any man have not the spirit of Christ he is none of his. For as many that are led by the spirit of God they are the sons of God. The spirit of God not only quickened but makes us alive it regenerates us and it bears witness with our spirit and we are the children of God. Back to the scripture text this morning that the Holy Spirit is one of the major doctrines of the New Testament and we believe there are three persons that bear witness or make up the triune Godhead or trinity. The father the son and the Holy Spirit all three of these we believe all three of these are separate individuals but each one has a distinct work and all three work together to accomplish the will of God for the salvation of men and for the honor and for the glory of God. I’ll take up this morning the first part of the personality of the Holy Spirit and I’ll ask you as we begin the message if you believe in the Holy Spirit. And I’ll affirm to you that I not only believe in it but I found it in the word of God and I have witness of it in my heart. I read to you where Jesus said it’ll come into you and live in you and abide in you as long as you live in this world. “I in you and you in me” and Bro. Brooks used to use that quotation when he was a pastor here. We are in him through the Holy Spirit and he’s in us and witnesses to us as we are his children by the Holy Spirit. Now the Pharisees said that they believed in God but they didn’t believe in Jesus Christ so they just believed in one God Almighty. No son but they did believe in a spirit and they also believed in an angel but Jesus said you can’t know one without knowing the others. So this morning if the Holy Spirit has come into your heart and born witness that you are saved you not only know the spirit and you know the son and his father. The bible said the father has sent forth his son in our hearts whereby we cry Abba Father and the word means our father. When we address him in prayer we say “our father which art in heaven” and we can do so because the Holy Spirit has made it known to us that we are the children of God and God is our heavenly father and Jesus Christ is our savior. You can’t know one without knowing the others. Now the Seduces didn’t believe in Jesus and they didn’t really believe in God but they did believe in an angel and the spirit but they didn’t believe in the resurrection. So these people were all mixed up and sometimes I’m mixed up but I always try to listen and to learn and get it all straightened out. So we believe there are three and we believe that all of these has a distinct work in our conversion. The father the son and the Holy Spirit and I may take that up a little later on in my message. But in this first part I want in emphasize that the Holy Spirit is a person and we cannot see him with our eyes and we can’t touch him with our fingers but he’s like the cool breeze that blows. And we can feel that spirit when it comes into our heart and actually we can feel it before it comes into our hearts. The spirit of Christ draws us to Jesus Christ and Jesus said “no man (person) can come to me except the father who sent me from him.  I remember that spirit drawing me and not only drawing me but tinkering around in my heart. It was like an magnet that was opposite that was drawing it. And so as the magnet attracts the object so does the heart of sinners that begins to draw them to the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. And as Jesus prayed he said “I pray the father I’m going away and he said I’ll send you another comforter.” And in verse 26 he said “but the comforter which is the Holy Spirit” he is that person the father will send in my name and he will teach you all things and will bring all things to your rememberance.” I want to say to you infaduactly this morning and this may be more in the case of ministers but in the case of ministers when you study the word of God if you will take time to dwell to meditate the verse the Holy Spirit will open up the understanding for you that you did not have so you can understand the scriptures. Not only that the Holy Spirit will bring to the ministers minds the things which they have studied that it may become effectual and people will learn and listen. Then it goes on beyond that where the Apostle Paul said of the Holy Spirit that it searcheth all things yea the deep things of God which is past our knowing and which is past our understanding the Holy Spirit searcheth out. You see I cannot know the hearts of any of you this morning but the spirit of God knows the heart of every man and searches the hearts of every person and when it finds you unsaved it begins right then with that drawing power the drawing of the Lord Jesus Christ that takes away the sins of the world. And then one step further the word of God affects the heart of people and becomes a sword in their hearts and convicts them of their sin. So the bible clearly states to us the Holy Spirit is a person and it works in our lives and brings us to rememberance certain things. In Matthew chapter 28 verses 19 and 20 and I’m not going to quote all of them but this is from the Great Comission. Jesus said to his church to go and make disciples. We know what that is and we know that’s our responsibility and he said to baptize them. Baptize who the disciples that’s been preaching the gospel and baptize them in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost. Now when we use these names it gives us the authority to baptize people that are saved and that they may declare in a scriptural baptism that they have become the children of God through the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. The story is clear to us that we have the authority to do that. The Holy Spirit is equal to God and somebody said I’ve never heard that before but honey it takes all three of them. God Almighty devised the plan and Jesus Christ is that plan and the Holy Spirit affects it in our hearts during conversion and so all of them are necessary. Then he said the Holy Spirit to testify to us about the Lord God Almighty and Jesus Christ and it does testify to our hearts doesn’t it? The Holy Spirit continued to witness to me when I was unsaved though the voices of men were silent the spirit witnessed to my heart every day that I needed to be saved. So the Holy Spirit is a person and the bible refers to is as the pronoun He. We know we dwell in him and he in us because he’s given us of his spirit. So going on from a person to the deity of the Holy Spirit the deity refers to God and the Holy Spirit is just as much God as the son is of God. In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. All things was made by him and without him was anything made that was made. You see God had the plan and Jesus Christ was the plan. But the Holy Spirit put it into effect when the world was without form and void and darkness upon the face of the deep and the bible said the spirit of God moved upon the face of the water. And God said let there be light and there was light. So through the voice of God the Holy Spirit brought into effect what God had said and made it alive and real. I need to say this morning to Christian people saved people and members of the church that the Holy Spirit maketh intercession for us. That means when we pray we always need somebody to help us. And you can say well Bro. Gentry can’t we pray without the Holy Spirit? Well no the answer’s no you just can’t pray without the spirit and likewise the Holy Spirit helpeth our infirmities. For we know not for what we shall pray but he’ll maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be heard. In other words the Holy Spirit takes the desires and intents of our hearts and makes them known unto the Lord and he answers our prayers. I’m glad he helps us aren’t you when we go to pray. I found a man and a woman in the New Testament lying to the Holy Spirit. In the early church they had agreed when they sold property to take the money and put it in a common collection. Annianas and ??? was two of these people and they sold a piece of land and kept back a part of the money. So the Lord sent Simon Peter to speak to them and Simon Peter said to Annianas why hast thou lied to the Holy Spirit? Well you know he didn’t have a reason and did you know it cost him his life? And not only him but his wife. And he went on in those passages and said “why have you lied unto the Lord?” So God Almighty and the Holy Spirit was the same thing. He had kept back part of it and had lied unto the Lord and the Holy Spirit and it was a very costly thing. I need to say to you this morning that when the Holy Spirit is sent to the world he’s sent to the world to guide us and lead us to all truth in the paths of righteousness. And if we say no or lie to the Holy Spirit it becomes a serious thing in our lives. Now just a few Sunday’s ago at our December business meeting Ms. June said she believe the Holy Spirit was the highest authority. It is the highest authority if God is really in it and not every spirit is of the Lord and some of them are of false prophets and the evil one. But if God is really in it honey we know the difference and we know when he leads us into all truth. The bible said he will lead us into all truths and guide us in all truths. Jesus said I must go away and if I go not away the Comforter will not come. But when he is come I want to state the facts he said here in just a minute. He did pray the Father and the father did answer his prayer, And he said when the Holy Spirit is come he will reprove the world of sin because you believed not on me. Isn’t that something? That’s the sinner and the word reproves means to convict and in simple the Holy Spirit tries our case of every individual. And he plans us in condemnation and unbelief and because he finds us in condemnation and unbelief he begins to work at the task of long suffering and righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ to convict us and lead us to repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So if you’re here this morning and all of us have a little difference in our experiences but we’ve all trodden the same path. God saves all people just alike and it is a common salvation. Everyone of us have experience the Holy Spirit tinkering with our hearts and wooing us. If we are really saved we have experienced the Holy Spirit convicting us of our sin. You can’t be saved before you are convicted and you can’t be convicted before you’re lost. And the Holy Spirit won’t draw you before you’re accountable and lost without God. So when we are convicted of our sins we become criminals unsaved in the sight of God. We feel our lost and ruined condition and we are reminded of the Holy Spirit that he not only reproves and condemns us but he finds us void of the righteousness of God. Reproves us of sin and of righteousness because we have no righteousness of our own until we come to the age of responsibility we are void of the righteousness of God. Therefore if we are to be saved the Holy Spirit must perform his word on us and in us to the fact that the righteousness of Jesus Christ is imputed to us. It goes on to reprove of the judgment to come that we are not as we are and prepared to fact the judgment seat of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So the Holy Spirit is a wonderful thing and let me say to you that Paul wrote to the Corinthians and he said to them “that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” And he explained by saying “this body is a temple of the Holy Spirit take care of it and don’t abuse it or misuse it and treat it right it is the house of God in which the Spirit of God dwells.” I know the spirit of God dwells in this temple and it’s clay and it’s going to go back to the dust from whence it came but the Spirit of God is eternal that’s in us and when we’ve drawn the last breath of our lives it will leave our body and go to the Lord to the eternal place where it should go. The Spirit of God is eternal and as eternal as God is. When he comes in our hearts and dwells in our hearts we know that when our time comes we’re going to go and be with the Lord. The spirit that’s in our heart is a down payment and a guarantee that God is going to bring us to Heaven. In the 4th chapter of Ephesians and verse 30 Paul used these words and said “grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed until the day of redemption.” What’s sealed? The soul of an individual when they are saved the spirit comes in and it is sealed as a seed in them to keep them from sinning against God and a guarantee that God will bring them to heaven where their life here is over. The Apostle used these words from the Book of Hebrews and you’ve heard them before. Paul talked about being the lambs and the goats and the ashes of a heifer that they used in the Old Testament sacrificing for the sins of the people and he said “how much more shall the blood of Christ who was offered through the eternal Spirit of God. Purge your conscience from dead works to serve a living God.” What does it do? The eternal Spirit of God our dead conscience from dead works and awakens them and recreates them to a new creature in the Lord Jesus Christ and we become the children of God. Aren’t you thankful for the Holy Spirit this morning? You wouldn’t be saved if it wasn’t for that spirit. The Lord said if we sin against the father it shall be forgiven us if we sin against the Son it shall be forgiven us but whosever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit shall never in this world be forgiven of that sin. Now you’re going to ask me Bro. Gentry what is the sin against the Holy Ghost? The first thing I’m going to tell you that it’s an impossibility for a Christian person to sin against the Holy Spirit. Now then I want to refer to an example Bro. Calvin Gregory was having a debate and the other debater made fun of made light of the Holy Spirit and its work in regeneration and Bro. Gregory said to him “Bro. I’m sorry and I hate to do this but the bible said what you just done is sin against the Holy Ghost.” And he said “what’s that?” Well honey he didn’t believe in the work of the Holy Spirit and besides not believing in it he made light of the work in which the Holy Spirit accomplished in saving people. And Bro. Gregory said “you’ve just sinned against the Holy Ghost and the bible said you shall never be forgiven of that sin.” So if you are unsaved this morning and when the Holy Spirit comes be careful how you listen be careful how you take heed. It is aproperiate for people to listen to the pleading and the work of the Holy Spirit in their hearts and in their lives. Now then back to something I said earlier Paul said “ the spirit searcheth all things yea the deep things” and honey it’ll search you and it’s more accurate than a camera it. They use these cameras for replays on football games and these referee’s sometimes makes a mistake. And they’ll say it’s one way but the camera sees it another way. But the Holy Spirit never misses and it’s always right. It searches every heart and it makes known to every person what is the mind of the spirit concerning their condition. The Psalmist said “whether shall I go from my spirit.” I’ll answer that and say there is no where you can go and hide from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit said to Adam and Eve when they hid themselves in the Garden of Eden. You remember they sewed fig leaves together and tired to hid themselves. They heard the Lord walking in the garden and they hid from him. But when the Lord came nigh he said “Adam where are you?” You see there was no where to hide. He knew that is the Lord knew he was in hearing distance when he said Adam where are you and he said I heard your voice. Adam said I was afraid and I was like that wasn’t you? I heard his voice and I was afraid and then the Psalmist said “whether shall I flee from thy presence.” There is no where you can go. I remember from the Old Testament named Jonah and he got on that ship and the Lord troubled the waters and when they were casting lots and Jonah said just cast me overboard and he did. God prepared a great whale to swallow him up and in the belly of that whale he found the Lord’s presence in the belly of that whale and with the sea weeds wrapped around his neck he prayed to the Lord and he said “Lord if you’ll get me out of this I’ll go and preach thy word.” That’s what he said and do you know what that fish did? The fish vomited him up and the voice came to him again and said “Arise Jonah and go to Ninavea that great city.” And he went down there to that city and there was over 120,000 that didn’t know their right hand from their left. And he preached a short and powerful message and do you know what he said ? He said “yet 40 days and Ninavea shall be overthrown and the bible said the people heard and repented by the preaching of Jonah. And the Lord spared the city and then Jonah got made didn’t he? Yea Jonah got made and went and sat under a tree and God sent worms to eat around that tree and it died and it left him there in the sun. So God’s Holy Spirit works wonders to behold in the world. There is one thing left in this world God’s sweet holy spirit can reach the unsaved. We are left to pray for our people and God will hear and answer our prayers. One more thing before I close Paul said to the church at Corinth “when you pray pray in the spirit and with the understanding.” Isn’t that wonderful? I’ve said to you before there’s two things about prayer. Number one we get in touch with God through our prayers and number two our prayers are to be for edification. When people hear us pray in the spirit of the Lord it not only affects us but it affects people who are listening to our prayers. And he went one step further and when you sing sing with the spirit and understanding. We think we have good singing here at this church and I like our singing but you know when the spirit comes to help us you can tell all the difference. People can tell the difference and they sit up and begin to listen and take notice and participate and I am so glad I know what the spirit is and that I have it abiding in my heart.
