Matthew 6:9-15

I normally have a Thanksgiving message for you on this morning, however the Lord willing I’ll try to have you a Thanksgiving message on next Sunday. I suppose we should be thankful and especially thankful for a bounty of food we’re going to have this week particularly Thanksgiving day and so the Lord willing I’ll have you a Thanksgiving message. I notice sometimes when we’re offering the blessing we offer the blessing before the food is on the table and we’ll say “Lord we thank you for this food that we’re about to partake” and so my message is not a Thanksgiving message but an everyday message on this Sunday. Galatians 6:1-16
We invite your attention to the reading of the scripture from the 1st Chapter of Galatians. The Apostle Paul was writing to the churches at Galatia and we believe these churches were as like our churches here in Smith County and North Carthage and I think here he in the first chapter he is giving them some good instructions which I hope this morning to share with you for a little while. From Galatians Chapter 1 and verse 6 I want you to pay attention to the reading of these scriptures. As he was writing to them he said: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another Gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you, than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Continue reading Of Another Faith: 9/12/10

The Lord is My Shepherd, I Shall Not Want

Psalm 23

My reading this morning will be from the 23rd Psalm. Almost everybody is familiar with the 23rd Psalm. Bro. Overton used to say of scripture that used over and over I don’t think it’s wore out. So I don’t think the 23rd Psalm is wore out and I think it’s as appropriate as the morning or evening as the Psalmist David wrote this Psalm. It’s a very comforting soul stirring message in this chapter and he said “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 1 Thessalonians 15:1-5

My devotional this morning will be from 1 Samuel chapter 15 beginning with verse one: “Samuel also said unto Saul, the Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. And Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. Philippians 3:1,11-15

For the devotional this morning turn to Philippians Chapter 3 beginning with the first verse. “Finally my brethren rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you to me indeed is not grievous but for you it is safe.” Now let’s turn to verse 11; “If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.” Continue reading Hitting The Mark: 10/17/10

1 Timothy 3:14-17

In this 3rd Chapter the Apostle Paul was writing to the young preacher Timothy and he was instructing him as a young minister and a young pastor. And so young pastors are under shepherds who are the Lord’s shepherds over the churches of the Lord Jesus Christ in this present world and we are to pattern our life and behavior as the Lord Jesus Christ. So beginning in Chapter 3 and verse 14; Paul said “these things I write unto thee (that is to Timothy) hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” That’s reading the last three verses of Chapter 3 of 1st Timothy for our devotional on this morning. Now what the Apostle Paul was doing was giving counsel to young ministers and young pastors in these verses and particularly to Timothy of that time. Timothy had been saved under his ministry he had been ordained and come under the hands of the presberty to the full work of the ministry and he was giving him instructions here at this time. Having said that he said I hope to come to you shortly and be with you but if for some reasons I have to tarry or in other words if it is longer than I am expecting it to be I want to give you this counsel and advice. Before I begin that counsel I want to read part of a paragraph from the church covenant. Everybody in the church understands the church covenant. Ecclesiastes 12:1-5
This song “I’ll Meet You There” reminds us of a wonderful thought many a mother has laid on her sick and dying bed and said to her son or daughter “I’m praying that I’ll meet you there.” And they were as sincere and in as much prayer as they could be. Many of those prayers have been answered and some of course because all parties much be in agreement an be involved in order for that to happen. Unfortunately some children have trampled underfoot the mercies of God and have trampled underfoot the prayers of their mothers and fathers and the messages of the sermons of preachers and the prayers of the church and on and on. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to say to each other that I’ll meet you there. Continue reading Remember Now Thy Creator In The Days of My Youth: 9/5/10
